iKon Slant Review

Shave of the Day
September 6, 2013

•Proraso Red Tub Soap
•Kingsley badger brush
•iKon Slant razor
•Astra SP blade (8)
•Pinaud Clubman

Last day with the iKon Slant (until next time).

Overall, the Slant is a great razor. It shaves efficiently and generally safely. I did manage a few nicks here and there.

The blade exposure is very small and there is a lot of bend on the blade. As a result, the blade makes more noise than most.

The blade alignment issue is not as serious as I first thought. There is a lot of play when you place the blade on the pins, but if you just pop the blade in and tighten the handle, it seems to align itself.

The head itself is a new twist on the slant design (pun intended). The head appears to be cast or molded. The finish is a bit rougher than the earlier iKon heads. I found the finish to be acceptable.

Just based on my own face and hair growth patterns, I experienced some difficulty getting the hair just under my nose. The head is wide and the blade is deeply recessed. I eventually found a way to get this area.

I got a close shave every time from this razor, but I believe that the Merkur Slant shaves closer.

I would recommend this razor dispite the cost, especially as an example of a unique and modern design.

iKon Open Comb

Shave of the Day
August 19, 2013

•Tabac!
•EverReady C40 boar brush
•iKon open comb head with Shavecraft bulldog handle
•Shark Super Chrome blade (3)
•Pinaud Clubman aftershave

Tabac is a great start with thick easy to build lather and a scent that is solid and classic (and I can’t describe it).

The iKon head is configured to provide an efficient and close shave.

Clubman is a great finish to any shave.

I am waiting for the iKon Slant. Maybe Thursday. Phil at Bullgoose has been great with keeping me informed.

I also have a Fatboy on the way. It is going to be a good week.

Gillette Milord TTO Razor

Shave of the Day
August 4, 2013

•Pre De Provence soap
•EverReady C40 boar brush
•Gillette 1940 Milord razor
•Bluebird chromium ceramic platinum tungsten blade (1)
•Pinaud Clubman aftershave

First shave with this razor. Thought it was a Ranger Tech, but in gold, it is a Milord. The case is a Milord case.

Nice shave. Bluebird blade pairs well. Pre de Provence makes a great lather and has a great botanical scent. Clubman is a classic finish to any shave.

Happy Sunday!

Gillette New Improved. Grandpa’s Razor

Shave of the Day
July 29, 2013

•Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender soap
•Kingsley badger brush
•Gillette New Improved Tuckaway (1924)
•Astra Platinum blade
•Pinaud Clubman Razor

Today would have been my Grandfather’s 114 birthday today, and I am shaving with his razor. I have had this razor since 1974, and it was the beginning of my collection and my love for old razors and wet shaving.

The New Improved was Gillettes first major redesign of the double edged razor. Introduced in 1921, my razor is a Tuckaway, a travel razor with a short handle and a metal case which would fit easily in a pocket or a shaving kit.

As always, the TOBS Lavender produces a great lather, and I love the scent.

The Astra blade is one of my go to blades and it pairs well with the New Improved.

Clubman provided a great finish to this shave.

Shaving with Grandpa’s razor is a great way to remember him. Grandpa, you are still missed.

EverReady 1914

Shave of the Day
July 23, 2013
Gem/EverReady Week (2)

•Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender soap
•Omega boar brush
•EverReady 1914 razor
•Gem stainless steel blade
•Pinaud Clubman aftershave

The Everready 1914 is a sort of mini lather catcher. My razor is a travel set. It gives a close shave, about as aggressive as the 1912. The cap flips open to reveal the blade. The hinge is opposite the blade edge.

The TOBS Lavender is one of my favorite soaps.

Pinaud Clubman is a great way to end a shave and start the day.

Next up, the EverReady 1924
